A Marine Biology Lesson in Disguise
Are you worried the kids’ weeks of summer vacation will turn their brains to mush? Fear not! Join the crew of Wild Hearts for a well-disguised lesson in marine biology.
Set sail from Orange Beach and see an array of marine life. A snorkeling adventure will offer peeks of underwater life not available in the classroom. Watch as schools of fish swim the waters of Orange Beach near Alabama Point. Or bring the family for the Perdido Key Scuba/Snorkeling Sail. This shallow dive sight is perfect for beginner divers or for snorkeling. At the Perdido Key Reef, the artificial reef sits just six to eight feet below the surface and creates a habitat for many species of tropical fish. You may even see a sea turtle!
Before your Orange Beach vacation, talk trivia with your kids and let them know they will likely see dolphins aboard Wild Hearts during the trip. These facts will help you get started.
- The bottlenose dolphin can weigh between 300 and 1400 pounds.
- These dolphins can swim at speeds up to 22 miles per hour.
- They can hold their breath for up to seven minutes, but they must come to the surface for air.
- Dolphins can exhale air at 100 miles per hour!
- Dolphins are not involuntary breathers like people. One side of their brain has to be active at all times so they remember to breathe. They never fully sleep.
- Bottlenose dolphins swim in groups of 10 to 25, called pods.
